Mar (she/her) is a Colombian dance, circus & shibari artist based in NYC. She started as a gymnast when she was young, and then fell in love with dance and moved to the USA to train at several conservatories, earning a BFA in Dance, with extra studies in Kinesiology and Visual Arts and other somatic practices. She mostly enjoys modern dance and ballet, but has experience in all sorts of contemporary forms as well as ethnic traditions. During this time she also found Yoga, and has over 1,000 hours of teacher trainings. As a Yoga teacher, she specialized in alignment and Yoga for spinal conditions and other injuries; which makes her teaching very anatomically informed as well as challenging.
When she moved to NYC in 2017, she quickly found and fell in love with the circus scene and started learning different disciplines, of which Contortion, Handbalancing, and Aerial are her favorites. She has been performing professionally nationally and internationally since, and you can catch her regularly at The Red Pavillion, House of Yes, The Box, and SNCTM.
Her classes are infused with knowledge she has gained while studying all sorts of movement practices, and will be challenging, rewarding, and lightheartedly enjoyable. She has experience with all sorts of bodies, injuries, and conditions, and will provide a safe space for anyone who wants to bend or get upside down. She also promises to crack at least one dad joke in every class.
What she offers at AANYC: Contortion & Handstand classes and privates.
